Sam Darbyshire
Character artist, 3D generalist, ARTIST, photographer
Throughout my life I've always found great joy in making things, moving from project to project, I love bringing things to life that I had only previously envisaged in my head.
i currently work part time as a visualisation artist at tangerine design, loving applying my skills to help develop our digital outputs to bring in new clients, with stills and animations as well as creating and packaging virtual reality experiences in ue5.
Working there three days a week is fantastic, i love being part of the creative team and developing r&D but it also gives me a chance to develop my skills as a character artist, my true passion, and push my portfolio. it is my main goal to develop myself as far as possible in this specialism and land a job doing it full time, hoping to bring my keen eye for realism and my skills across the pipeline brought from all my experiences in many areas so far.
With a background of fine art at school, I developed a taste for films that led me to studying them at Warwick university. Whilst there I realised that, as much as I enjoyed analysing films, I really wanted to make them.
I missed working creatively and so chose to leave the course at the end of my second year, taking a gap year and enrolling the computer animation art and design ba at Bournemouth University. It was an amazing experience, making great friends of those who also fell in love with working in CG. Teaching me so much i went on to graduate with first class honours and my fellow Liz cousins and I had our final major project, A.M.Y, selected for the unreal engine fall student showcase.
My first role came as an assistant visualisation artist at Foster and Partners, Working as part of the architectural visualisation team in the animation and stills departments. My role as a generalist covered the whole pipeline and a variety of project types, covering face paced animations to a detailed level of realism.
It gave me great experience working in a professional environment and high end VFX team as well as developing new software's such as 3DS Max and massively improving my composting skills in Nuke and Photoshop. however I found I was in the same position as at the end of my time at warwick, although I was learning so much it wasn't my true passion, I was doing a course as part of the Cg master academy to further my skills as a character artist and pushing further with my portfolio I began to realise that my focus needed to switch.
Joining tangerine I've found to be a great balance, allowing me to continue learning as a visualiser and develop my character work in my spare time, I hope my skills can take me to a new level in that area.
My software proficiencies now include:
MAYA - 3DS MAX - BLENDER - ZBRUSH - MUDBOX - PHOTOSHOP - SUBSTANCE SUITE - MARI - CORTEX - MOTIONBUILDER - UNREAL ENGINE - NUKE - DA VINCI RESOLVE
My pastimes include photography, a medium I love playing with to improve my shot composition. I also enjoy climbing, kayaking and I'm a big sports fan, growing up in finsbury park it's hard not to be an arsenal fan
